It\u2019s the one piece of furniture that sees us every day\u2014still half-asleep in pyjamas, getting ready for a dinner date, or flinging open doors in a frantic Monday rush. And yet, we rarely give it the attention it deserves.<\/h5>\n
Today, I want to change that, in today\u2019s post I want to talk to you about wardrobes\u2014where they came from, how we got here, and how you can design the perfect built-in for your home. Think of it as both a little love letter to the humble armario, and a practical guide for creating your own.<\/h5>\n

From Armaria to Armoire: A Brief (and Beautiful) History<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Let\u2019s rewind. Way back to ancient Greece and Rome, where our modern concept of a wardrobe had its humble beginnings. The Romans called theirs armaria<\/em>\u2014they weren\u2019t wardrobes as we know them, more like beautifully crafted chests or trunks (arcones<\/em>), designed to store precious belongings. Later, in medieval Europe, the idea evolved into something more enclosed and secure.<\/h5>\n
But it wasn\u2019t until the Renaissance and Baroque periods that the French armoire<\/em> really took shape. Derived from the Latin armarium<\/em>, these were grand pieces, often carved with ornate details, made not just for function but for flair. Then, during the rise of the bourgeoisie in the 18th and 19th centuries, wardrobes became fixtures in homes across England\u2014wardrobes<\/em>\u2014not just for the wealthy but for all.<\/h5>\n
By the 20th century, the built-in wardrobe<\/em> had arrived. And that\u2019s where we find ourselves today.<\/h5>\n

So, how do you design a wardrobe that fits your space, your clothes, and your life?<\/h5>\n
1. Start with the Magic Number: 60cm<\/strong><\/h5>\n
This is the golden rule. A depth of 60cm gives you just the right amount of space\u2014enough for hangers, doors, and airflow. Whether you\u2019re sketching your own layout or chatting with a carpenter, remember this number. It\u2019s the foundation of wardrobe design.<\/h5>\n
2. Think in Modules, Not Monoliths<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Don\u2019t imagine a giant, immovable block. Built-in wardrobes are usually made in sections\u2014modules. These can range from 110cm to 160cm, but I always say: stay around 55\u201360cm for each door. Why? Because it keeps everything elegant, balanced, and functional. Yes, you can<\/em> go bigger\u2014I\u2019ve done stunning 80cm doors\u2014but it comes with more weight, more cost, more everything.<\/h5>\n
3. Abatibles or Correderas?<\/strong><\/h5>\n
I\u2019m partial to hinged doors (abatibles<\/em>). There\u2019s something about their classic charm and clean lines. But sliding doors (correderas<\/em>) work wonders when space is tight. The key is choosing what complements your room, not just what\u2019s trendy.<\/h5>\n
