The Heart Behind the Design: My Story in Interiors
Seventy-five weeks ago, I embarked on a journey to share my passion for interior design through a podcast. What began on September 1, 2023, has blossomed into a weekly ritual of storytelling, insight, and connection. Eleven weeks ago, I expanded this venture into the visual realm with a YouTube channel, bringing the world of interiors to life in a new dimension. Yet, amidst the discussions of design principles and project highlights, I realized I had scarcely shared the story behind the designer, me.
The Genesis: From Galicia to Global Design
My roots trace back to the verdant landscapes of Galicia, specifically Ourense, where the rhythms of construction and creation were the backdrop of my upbringing. As the daughter and granddaughter of Modesto Prada, both deeply entrenched in the construction industry, the language of building was second nature. While their focus was on the structural and technical, my path veered towards the aesthetic and experiential facets of spaces.
Educational Foundations: Bridging Technique and Aesthetics
My academic journey began with a degree in Technical Architecture, and Building engineering providing a solid foundation in the structural aspects of building. This technical grounding was further enriched by studies in Interior Design at IADE Madrid, located on the elegant Calle Claudio Coello. Recognizing the importance of historical context, I pursued a master’s in the Restoration and Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings. This blend of technical proficiency and design sensitivity has been instrumental in shaping my holistic approach to interiors.
The Inaugural Project: Innovation at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela
My first professional foray into design was the rehabilitation of stables A and C at Madrid’s Hipódromo de la Zarzuela, in collaboration with Tragsa and Tragsatec. A vivid memory from this project is the implementation of foot-operated taps—an idea born from observing the practical needs of those working with horses. This early experience underscored the importance of marrying functionality with thoughtful design.
Mentors and Influences: A Legacy of Craftsmanship
While I didn’t have a formal mentor, the influence of my father and grandfather was profound. Their dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail instilled in me a deep respect for the built environment. Their legacy serves as a constant reminder of the value of integrity and precision in every project.
Embracing London: A Hub of International Design
Relocating to London was a pivotal decision, driven by a desire to immerse myself in a city renowned for its design innovation and diversity. Here, I’ve had the privilege of working on projects across the globe, from the opulent residences of the Middle East to serene retreats in the Caribbean. Each project presents unique challenges and opportunities, enriching my perspective and expanding my design vocabulary.
Navigating Challenges: Complexity as a Catalyst
Designing a six-meter-long table in a single piece or overseeing a £55 million luxury apartment development in Westminster are examples of the complex projects that have honed my problem-solving skills. These experiences reinforce the belief that complexity, when approached with creativity and diligence, can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
Client Relationships: Stories That Inspire
Among the many clients I’ve worked with, one stands out—a London-based individual who, despite learning to read and write at the age of 12, rose to prominence through sheer determination. Collaborating with clients who have such compelling narratives adds depth and meaning to the design process.
Budgeting with Purpose: Creativity Within Constraints
Regardless of scale, every project operates within a budget. Embracing these constraints fosters innovation, compelling me to find creative solutions that deliver exceptional value without compromising on quality or aesthetics.
Common Issues: Timing and Listening
Two prevalent issues in interior design projects are delayed involvement of designers and insufficient listening. Engaging designers early in the process and fostering open communication are critical for aligning visions and ensuring cohesive outcomes.
Material Selection: A Symphony of Elements
Selecting materials is akin to composing a symphony, where each element must harmonize with the others. Factors such as the client’s lifestyle, the architectural context, and the intended ambiance guide the curation of materials, ensuring a cohesive and resonant design.
Tools of the Trade: Merging Tradition with Technology
While I still value the tactile experience of sketching with pen and paper, technology plays a significant role in my workflow. Utilising software like Adobe InDesign and BIM tools like ArchiCAD allows for precise planning and visualisation, enhancing collaboration and execution.
Balancing Form and Function: Design with Purpose
Functionality is the cornerstone of my design philosophy. Aesthetics emerge from understanding and addressing the practical needs of a space, resulting in environments that are both beautiful and purposeful.
Defining Style: A Reflection of Clients
Rather than adhering to a singular style, my designs are tailored to reflect the unique personalities and preferences of each client. The consistent threads across projects are a commitment to quality, attention to detail, and a bespoke approach.
Evolution of Practice: Continuous Learning
Over the years, my approach has evolved, embracing new technologies and methodologies. The transition from hand-drawn plans to immersive 3D models exemplifies this growth, enhancing the ability to communicate ideas and engage clients in the design journey.
Sensory Preferences: Embracing Natural Elements
I have a profound appreciation for natural materials—textured woods, honed stones, and tactile fabrics. These elements bring warmth and authenticity to spaces, creating environments that resonate on a sensory level.
Personal Influence: Structured Creativity
My structured and methodical nature influences my design process, ensuring that creativity is grounded in strategy. This balance enables the translation of abstract concepts into tangible, functional spaces.
Sources of Inspiration: From Clients to Nature
Inspiration is omnipresent—found in the narratives of clients, the craftsmanship of artisans, the vibrancy of cities, and the tranquility of nature. Each source contributes to a rich tapestry of ideas that inform and elevate my designs.
Work-Life Integration: Embracing the Flow
As a creative professional, the boundaries between work and life often blur. Ideas can emerge during a yoga session or a leisurely walk. Embracing this fluidity allows for a dynamic and responsive design practice.
Advice for Aspiring Designers: Forge Your Path
To those entering the field of interior design, I encourage you to remain open to the journey. Your career path may diverge from expectations, leading to opportunities and experiences beyond imagination. Embrace the unknown and let your passion guide you.
Aspirations: Sharing Knowledge and Expanding Horizons
Looking ahead, I aspire to continue sharing insights through various platforms, contribute to educational initiatives, and develop product lines that reflect my design ethos. Each endeavour is a step towards enriching the dialogue around interior design.
Gratitude and Continuation
As I reflect on these 75 weeks of sharing and growth, I am filled with gratitude for the community that has joined me on this journey. Your engagement and support are the foundation of this adventure. Here’s to the continued exploration of interiors and the stories they hold.
